Independent * Strong * Intelligent * Adaptable * Defender
Natalie Thurman breeds and raises Anatolian Shepherds as livestock guardian dogs, an ancient way of deterring predators like bears, in Ninemile, Montana, on Friday, September 29, 2023. "They help you sleep at night," explains Thurman. The Turkish dog breed can grow up to 150 lbs.

Livestock guardian dogs have been bred for thousands of years to bond with their shepherd and flock and deter predators. While the LGD breeds vary in physical appearance and temperament scale, their goal has always been to protect what is theirs.

The livestock guardian dog is an intelligent, independent dog who evaluates risks to their wards and territory. Their instinct is to first deter incoming threats, not to attack or harm.
